Ekiti partners Suzuki on road transportation

In order to stem
the tide of inter and intra-union’s squabbles in Ekiti State, the state
government has presented 140 vehicles to members of transport unions in
the state.

The state governor,
Kayode Fayemi said that his government is committed to ensuring
peaceful and harmonious relationship between the men of the National
Union of Road Transport workers (NURTW) and their rival group, Road
Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). He noted that the
step was taken to ease transportation problems in the state, as well as
ensuring the security of lives and property of the people through
gainful employment of members of the unions.

The programme, according to the governor, was a public-private
partnership initiative between Suzuki Company and the Urban Development
Bank Nigeria. “It is always painful; to me any time I visited our motor
parks and see many of our professional drivers standing there idly. To
me, this has been a contributory factor to the incessant internal
strife in all the drivers unions in this state,” he said. “But if the
drivers are gainfully employed now with this kind of initiative, it
will surely put a stop to the disruption of public peace by these
people.” He promised the cooperation of his administration to the
radical development of the transport sector through partnership with
relevant agencies and urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the
gesture by paying back to the partners as negotiated.
