TV presenter Giuliana Rancic has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The E! News and Style Network host, 37, discovered she had a tumour while undergoing in-vitro fertilisation in a bid to get pregnant.
However, doctors are optimistic they have detected the cancer early and she will make a full recovery.
Rancic made the announcement on NBC's Today Show Tuesday morning, admitting she will undergo surgery later this week.
She said: “Through my attempt to get pregnant through IVF, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer. It's been a shock.”
Rancic and her husband Bill were preparing to undergo a third round of IVF treatment after two failed attempts when a doctor asked her to have a mammogram.
She was initially resistant to the idea because she considered herself to young to be at risk, but the doctor demanded she undergo the test because the surge of hormones during pregnancy can accelerate cancer.
She explained: “I wasn't prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old, like I'd been told. I never in my wildest dreams expected anything to be wrong. It was just a kick in the stomach.”
Recalling the moment she found out, Rancic said: “I went into the hospital in L.A., when they came in to tell me, they said it pretty quickly, they just said, ‘I'm sorry, you have breast cancer.’”
“It's what you expect, but so much more, it was like, incredible instant sobbing and the world just crashed down around me. I couldn't believe it – 36 years old, no family history? I couldn't believe it.”
After her lumpectomy, Rancic will undergo six weeks of radiation therapy.
She says her husband has been a 'unbelievable' source of support. “The best thing about Bill is, he lets me cry when I want to cry,” Rancic said.
Bill tweeted today: “Thank you for all ur love & support today. G is reading all your messages. She will win this fight, I PROMISE, & be back better than ever!”
Despite her illness, Rancic is hopeful she and her husband will be able to resume IVF after her cancer treatment.
She said: “I still want this baby … because this baby has saved my life. I truly feel God was looking out after me… If I had gotten pregnant later down the line, I could have been a lot sicker.”
Celebrities were quick to send their well wishes over Twitter.
Kelly Osbourne, who stars alongside her on E!'s Fashion Police, let Rancic know she is thinking about her.
Kelly, 26, whose mother Sharon was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2002, wrote: “I just want u 2 know I love you & that I'm thinking of u! u r a strong women & ur going 2 beat the s*** out of this cancer!!!”
Country singer LeAnn Rimes, who recently made up with the star after a war of words over weight, chimed in too.
She tweeted: “@GiulianaRancic Sending love and prayers your way!”
Rancic and her 40-year-old husband, who won The Apprentice in 2004, star in their own reality TV show on the Style Network.?
The couple first met in 2004 and began dating two years later after flirting during a television interview.
Rancic had asked Bill on-camera if he was dating anyone – he wasn't – and after the cameras stopped rolling, he asked her out.
They wed in 2007 in an intimate ceremony on the Italian island of Capri.
The pair's reality show, which has continued for four seasons, chronicled their ongoing attempts to start a family.
Last year Giuliana suffered a miscarriage and just last week the couple said they were considering adopting a child.
