US To Modernise Nigeria’s Security Agencies

Following discussions at the just-concluded Nigeria–United States Bi-National Commission (BNC), the United States will improve the Nigeria’s security services by modernising its security agencies.

This was disclosed in the joint communiqué issued at the two-day meeting which ended in Abuja yesterday.

Given Nigeria’s inability to effectively tackle terrorism and the enormous security challenges posed by the Boko Haram violent activities, the two countries agreed to collaborate on improving the nation’s operational capabilities in areas that include training, intelligence sharing, modernisation of security services, logistics and other requirements.

Though the worsening security condition in the north of Nigeria was not part of the BNC framework, the two nations had to accommodate it given the Boko Haram terrorist activities and its implications to regional peace and security.
