237 Persons Die In Auto Crashes In Edo

A total of 237 persons died in 348 auto crashes last year in Edo, Mr John Aniedi, the Public Relations Officer of the state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, said on Wednesday in Benin.

Aniedi said the fatalities comprised 190 males, 35 females and children 12.

“In all, 1,144 victims sustained injuries out of the 1,381 persons involved in the accidents,'' he said, recalling that in 2010, only 112 persons died in auto crashes.

Of the figure, 82 were males, while females numbered 20 and children 10.

“In 2010, those injured stood at 871 out of the 1,036 victims involved in the accidents.”

The spokesman attributed the causes of most of the accidents to carelessness, recklessness, lack of vehicle maintenance and tyre burst.

He advised passengers to caution their drivers against over-speeding and overloading.
