The National Drug? Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday announced the arrest of three suspected drug traffickers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The Head of Public Affairs of the agency, Mr Mitchel Ofoyeju, made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos.
According to Ofoyeju, the suspected traffickers, who were arrested on Sunday, tested positive to drug ingestion during checks on passengers.
He said that the suspects attempted to smuggle various quantities of narcotics outside the country.
The agency spokesman said that one of the suspects, a 28-year-old man on his way to Milan, ingested 99 wraps of substances that tested positive to cocaine, weighing 1.425kg.
“Another 37- year- old suspect, who has lived in Madrid for 10 years, ingested 85 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.350kg.
“The last suspect, a 33-year-old man, who claimed to be an auto parts dealer, ingested 85 wraps of methamphetamine, weighing 1.250kg on his way to Malaysia,” Ofoyeju said.
The spokesman also said that six Nigerians, who were allegedly involved in drug trafficking, were deported from Spain on Tuesday.
Ofoyeju said that the male deportees were received and documented by anti-narcotic officials, after arriving aboard a chartered flight.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to continue to project the image of the country and control illicit drug trafficking, describing drug trafficking as shameful and embarrassing to the nation.
“The agency will continue to arrest drug traffickers and prosecute them. Let me therefore advise that anybody contemplating drug trafficking should learn from the cases of those already arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
