Why We Can’t Pay Salaries — LG Liaison Officers

Liaison officers in the 21 local government areas of Kogi State have given reasons why they have not been able to pay full salaries to staff since they assumed office in June this year.

At a joint press conference in Government House, Lokoja with state officials of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees(NULGE), the chairman of the head of the councils in the state, Mr. Faruk Adejoh, disclosed that over 70 per cent of? local government allocations in the state goes to primary school teachers.

He specifically stated that out of the N2.3 billion that came to the councils last month, only N623 million got to the local governments, adding that the rest of the money went to the State Universal Education Board, pension board and council of chiefs among others.

He said? that the meeting with NULGE officials was aimed at fashioning out the way forward, saying that they have resolved to find ways of tackling the problem.

Adejoh stressed that it is not their fault that they could not pay full salaries, stressing however, that they have been charged by the state governor to look inward to improve the deplorable situation at the councils.
