The University of Ibadan is the oldest Nigerian university, and is located five miles (8km) from the centre of the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria.

The University of Ibadan is the oldest Nigerian university, and is located five miles (8 kilometres) from the centre of the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria. It has over 12,000 students.

The University, which was originally instituted as an independent external college of the University of London and then called the ‘University College, Ibadan‘, was founded in 1948.

At first, it occupied the old site previously used by the 56th Military General Hospital about eight kilometers away from the ‘new’ or permanent site. The new site covered over 1,032 hectares of land generously leased by the chiefs and people of Ibadan for 999 years.

With equipment transferred from Yaba Higher College, the 104 foundation students (including 49 students in teacher training and survey courses) began their courses at Ibadan, on 18 January, 1948; the formal opening took place on 25 March, 1948.

In February, 1948, London University allowed Ibadan its special relationship scheme. Arthur Creech Jones, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, and an influential member of the Elliot Commission, turned the first sod at the permanent site of the University College, on 17 November, 1948, which became the Foundation Day.

The American International School Of Lagos (AISL) is a private, coeducational school, which offers an American educational program for students of all nationalities in grades Pre-K through 12th grade.

The school was founded in 1964 and continues to thrive as an independent U.S. State Department school supported, in part, by a school-to-school partnership with Tacoma Public Schools in Tacoma, Washington and the Klein Independent School District in Houston, Texas. The August to June school year is divided into trimesters, for the elementary students, and semesters for the secondary students. AISL is an IBO World School.

Organization: A 9-member Board of Directors governs AISL. The American International School of Lagos Association elects eight of the Directors for a three (3) year term. Members of the Association are parents and/or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The ninth seat is reserved for an appointee of U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria.

Curriculum: The program is a rigorous curriculum of an American Educational Institution and is taught in English. The Elementary (PreK-5) curriculum, materials, instruction, and assessment program are developed using a U.S. curriculum development model, based on national standards.

Each subject area is reviewed annually in order to insure that we are using the best and most current materials available to our teachers. Instruction is in English with ELL services and a limited Student Support Program for grades K-5. Special courses include: IT, French, Spanish, P.E., Music, Art, African Studies, and Library. Instructional technology skills are integrated into the core curriculum. The School administers the ITBS/ISA as annual standardized assessments.
