The Ekiti State
government has concluded arrangements to set up mobile courts to
prosecute flouters of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise The
state governor, Kayode Fayemi disclosed this at Oye Ekiti in Oye Local
Government Area of the state while monitoring the environmental
exercise in the state over the weekend.

He noted that
people of the state did not comply fully with the directive to
participate in the monthly exercise as they were seen moving about in
some areas ,while a market opened for usual buiness at Ayegbeju Ekiti
contrary to the provision of the sanitation laws.

He added that that
the lukewarm attitude of the people to the exercise may have originated
from the fact that it was the first in over 3years, saying that it will
no longer be business as usual for people who flout environmental laws
in the state. Mr Fayemi revealed that relevant agencies and security
operatives will be co-opted to ensure success of subsequent exercise,
adding that government will also embark on enlightenment campaign to
sensitise the people on the need to keep their surroundings clean.

The governor who
charged the people to pay more attention to their environmental
cleanliness in order to prevent avoidable outbreak of diseases, said, ‘
“Areas like Atikankan, Adebayo in Opopogboro and Cathedral in Erekesan
market are sore points. We will insist on our people taking on their
responsibility as citizens , thereby helping the government in
maintenance of its infrastructure”. “The horrible habit of defecating
in public gutters and waterways as well as dumping of refuse in
drainages instead of the using the waste disposal system provided by
government is a thing of concern,I urge landlords not to wait until
they are prosecuted before they provide toilet facilities in their
houses” he warned.

“You must have noticed that the state government had, in the last
one month, embarked on the clearing of drains to free the water
channels and rid them of accumulated dirt. We have zero tolerance for
any form of dirt and we are not comfortable with anything that may lead
to an outbreak of diseases. This administration shall therefore leave
no stone unturned towards ensuring that people pay proper attention to
sanitation”,Mr Fayemi declared.
