The Kano State
government has declared Friday a work-free day to enable public
servants in the state to register, the Commissioner for Information
Haruna Dederi, has said. The commissioner, who announced this on
Wednesday shortly after the state executive council meeting, said the
decision was taken to build on the success recorded during the
exercise. Mr. Dederi said the holiday would enable public servants and
their family members to register, adding that employers in the private
sector ought to also observe the holiday.

The commissioner
said the active participation of stakeholders in the exercise was
responsible for the success recorded so far. He commended the roles
played by traditional rulers, religious leaders and top government
functionaries in mobilising the people for the exercise. Mr. Dederi
said the programme had recorded “positive results” in the state in
spite of the initial hitches and urged the Independent National
Electoral Commission to address the problems.
