Another candidate joins Olurin campaign

A serving senator
and former governorship contender, Kola Bajomo, at the weekend declared
his support for Tunji Olurin as the party’s flagbearer. Mr. Bajomo also
said that he was not going to decamp to the People’s Party of Nigeria
(PPN) as had recently been done by some Gbenga Daniel supporters.
Addressing a press conference in Abeokuta yesterday, Mr. Bajomo, who is
the latest former opponent of Mr. Olurin to join his campaign, said his
decision was a sign of his commitment as a loyal member of the ruling
party who had been a beneficiary of the party for the past eight years.

“I want to call our
attention to the contemptuous primaries in our party and the court
ruling which declared Adetunji Idowu Olurin as the flagbearer of our
party on 4th March, 2011,” Mr. Bajomo said. “With this judgment, we
felt it had become imperative that the parties in the last
three-year-old crisis would naturally come together and work for the
victory of the party in the interest of peace, progress and collective
interest of our party.”

No defections

Expressing shock
over the sudden defection of some loyalists of Mr. Daniel to another
party, Mr. Bajomo said he called the press conference to reaffirm his
membership and that of his followers of the People’s Democratic Party.

“I have decided that as loyal member of our great party, who had
benefited from its electoral successes, I shall continue to be in the
vanguard of responsible leadership to contribute meaningfully well to
our election success at the coming election,” he said. “I want to use
this opportunity to pay glowing tributes to the open support so far
exhibited by my party, the People’s Democratic Party for the Yewa-Awori
cause, culminating in picking its flagbearer in this manner. We are
solidly behind Olurin and the party.”
