The police in Bauchi State have arrested a housewife who
allegedly hired thugs to kill her husband.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abdulkadir Indabawa,
disclosed this to newsmen in his office yesterday while parading the woman,
Habiba Abubakar, a mother of two and two other suspects.

Mr Indabawa said “the estranged wife allegedly hired four thugs
to kill her husband because she felt she was tired and fed up with the marriage
and whenever she complained to her parents, they never listened to her and
surprisingly, the husband and wife are cousins.” He explained that Mrs Abubakar
hid the thugs in the house with the intention of calling them out to do their
job of killing her husband as soon as he fell asleep.

The Police boss said two of the four suspects hired the
housewife have been arrested and would soon be charged to court. He further
said, “We will pursue the remaining two that are at large in order to bring
them to book.”

Unhappy in her marriage

Speaking to newsmen, Mrs Abubakar she said she is not happy in
her. “He will bring food to the house and give me only N200 to cook the food. I
have been taking my complaints to our parents but they didn’t listen. My
husband had divorced me three times but on each occasion, his parents returned
me to my matrimonial home.” Mrs Abubakar added that there is no way she could
be separated from her husband unless he died and hence her decision to contract
thugs to eliminate him. She claimed “it was the devil’s work”.

Narrating the incident, the husband of the estranged wife, Fada
Abubakar, said he came back to his house around 9pm and later went out to
purchase food items.

He said: “When I came home, I heard a strange movement inside my
house and I told my wife about it. She said maybe it is just wind. I then
directed her to close the door which she did.” Mr Abubakar said he later heard
people shouting outside and calling him to come and identify some strangers.

“When I came out, I saw two men who had been arrested by the
crowd who asked me if I knew them but I didn’t know them and they were taken to
the police.” In their confession, the two other suspects arrested, Uzairu
Mohammed, and Auwalu Ahmed, said they were contacted by the woman to kill her
husband but they decided to drop the idea in the long run.

“We have never killed anyone in our life and we couldn’t do it
even though she hired us. In the process of trying to leave the house, our
knives fell and we were arrested,” they said.
