Worried over the
rise in the number of kidnap incidents recorded in the state in recent
times, Delta State governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan at the weekend called
for the immediate establishment of a special court to accelerate the
trial and prosecution of all those caught in the act.

Mr Uduaghan, who
stated that cases of kidnapping in the state have taken a worrisome
dimension pointed out that those arrested in connection to some
kidnapping incidents have not been tried and convicted by conventional
courts. He said this is not good enough in the effort to combat the
crime.

Relocate or face hard times

Speaking on the
Warri Radio Pidgin Programme, ‘Make Our Country Better,’ the governor
condemned what he described as politically motivated abductions in the
state and advised those behind the act to relocate from the state or be
ready for a hard time.

“What is going on
right now is politically motivated abductions and those responsible
should desist from it because it is not good for our state and our
people,” he said. “The other day, they kidnapped two children of a
strong member of our party; now they have kidnapped the old mother of
Ighoyota Amori, enough is enough.”

Raiding the elderly

The 96 year old
mother of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial candidate in
Delta Central Senatorial district, Ighoyota Amori, was kidnapped last
week.

Mr Amori confirmed the kidnap of his mother, Obereyibo Amori at Ugbokpa, Mosogar in Ethiope West Local Government Area.

He also disclosed
that contact has been established with the kidnappers, whom he said are
demanding that he drop his senatorial ambition and pay the sum of N100m
to secure the release of the old woman.

“My 96-year-old
mother is a peace loving woman and should not be dragged into my
political ambition,” he said while appealing to the kidnappers to
release her.

Mr Amori expressed hope that God will touch the hearts of the kidnappers to release his mother.
