Council Chairman Warns Residents Over Refuse Dump

The Chairman of Gwagwalad Area Council, Hon Zakari Angulu Dobi, has vowed that henceforth, any resident caught disposing refuse at the drainage system, waterway or major roads would be prosecuted in the mobile court.

He gave the warning yesterday in Gwagwalada while inspecting some of the ongoing projects at Old Kutunku, township roads as well as the town hall site.
“I want to assure the residents that the council has gotten an approval to set up a mobile court and anybody caught disposing refuse indiscriminately, we will not hesitate to prosecute such offenders according to the law,” he warned.

Angulu further directed the councilor representing Kutunku ward to summon a stakeholders meeting involving the village heads and other community leaders to educate them on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially on the drainage system.

This he said would be followed up with an enlightenment campaign by the environmental sanitation department of the council so as to create awareness on the need to maintain a healthy environment.

He said, “Urgently I have directed that the council secretary should call the councilor representing Kutunku ward to hold a stakeholders meeting within the community involving the village heads and other community leaders to let them know that what they are doing is bad. After that, the environmental sanitation department will also follow to ensure that proper campaign is being carried out within the community on the need to maintain a healthy environment.

The chairman who expressed dissatisfaction on the level of work at the old Kutunku Road issued a two week ultimatum to the contractor to improve on the project, saying that the council does not owe monies budgeted for any contractor.

“For the Old Kutunku Road, we have discussed with the contractor and we have given him a period of two weeks to improve on the work. We are not saying that we are absolutely satisfied with the project, but he has to put in more efforts.
On his part, the contractor handling the Kutunku Road, Mr Ibrahim Zubairu, promised to complete the road before the end of November. ?
