The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it will consult the party’s stakeholders over demands for fresh governorship primaries. This it says has become necessary following agitations by some of its states’ chapters ahead the 2012 governorship elections.
The ruling party’s decision to consult its stakeholders might not be unconnected with the announcement of governorship election dates by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in five states of the Federation.
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the NWC meeting, the National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali disclosed that the NWC had commenced wide consultation with stakeholders and party leaders at various levels to guide it in arriving at a mutually acceptable decision.
On the situation in Kogi state, Alkali said ‘‘we feel that we have to do some consultations whether there will be fresh primaries in the state and our decision will be made public as soon as we conclude our consultations.
“We are therefore calling on all PDP members in the state to rally round the leadership of the party to ensure that opposition does not have a leeway to penetrate and weaken the chances of the party in the election”, he said.
He explained that the NWC was still standing by the decision it took after its meeting last week that the South East Zonal leadership of the party should oversee the affairs of the Anambra State chapter of the party until fresh congresses were conducted to elect new officers, lamenting that such crisis had cost the party some political misfortunes.
