The authorities of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, has announced the expulsion of 62 students for alleged involvement in examination malpractice.
The rector, Alhaji Mohammed Gamaye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zungeru yesterday that the students were expelled following the report of an investigation committee which indicted them for their involvement in fraudulent activities during the 2009/2010 first semester examinations.
He said that the institution had strengthened its supervision mechanism which made it easier to detect any malpractice by students during examinations.
Gamaye said that any student or lecturer caught in such ignoble acts would be always punished in accordance with the law of the institution.
“The institution has zero tolerance for examination malpractice and other vices,’’ he said.
Gamaye advised students to read hard and understand their course work, to enable them to pass their examinations with ease, instead of resorting to fraudulent activities.
“Students must attend classes regularly, do their assignments and write their tests, in addition to reading, so that they can excel.’’
He said the institution was currently revalidating the certificates presented by its higher national diploma students from their former institutions with which they secured admission, to ascertain their genuineness.
“We have written to those institutions where the students claimed to have undertaken their national diploma programmes, so that those found to have presented fake results will be expelled, in line with our policy.’’
The rector said the institution was also revalidating the certificates of all its staff, in line with the directive of the state Ministry of Education.
He announced that the National Board for Technical Education (NABTE) had accredited two more programmes, HND Electrical Engineering and HND Power Machine Option/Technical Machine Option, for the institution.
Gamaye said that efforts would be made to get accreditation for Mass Communication programme after the institution must have secured necessary funding for it.
He commended the state government for prompt release of funds to the institution, and urged wealthy individuals to collaborate with the administration in tackling the accommodation problem facing students. (NAN)
