Suswam Vs Ugba: Tribunal Begins Trial

The Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Makurdi will today begin trial of the case between the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Governor Gabriel Suswam and the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Prof. Steven Ugba .

?Ugba had petitioned against Suswam? alleging election rigging in the last April general elections and has, by the order of the tribunal, tendered for the Bar all electoral materials certified by Independent National electoral Commission.

While presenting the evidences, counsel to the petitioner, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, tendered to the court certified INEC voters registers for 11 local governments, out of the 23 that participated in? the last April general elections in Benue state.

The local government are Ado, Apa, Konshisha, Kwande, Katsina-Ala and Oturkpo. Others are Ukum, Logo, Gwer-west, Guma and Okpokwu local governments.
But counsel to Governor Suswam, Donald Denwigwe, SAN, had observed that the polling unit 005/Hausa quarters/Zaki-Biam/Gidin Katanya as contained on page 40 of the voters register do not conform with the requirements of certification and that because it does not bear any certified date.

Tribunal chairman, Munin Ladan, held that once a document is relevant and also admissible on point of law shall be evidenced and marked as exhibit respectively.
