Jonathan Arrives New York, Addresses General Assembly Wednesday

President Goodluck Jonathan will leave Abuja for New York on Monday to join other world leaders where they will be addressing the 66th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

The President, who is among over 30 world leaders that will be speaking at the opening session of the General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, will on Wednesday, address the UN General Assembly at its headquarters in New York.

Apart from addressing the General Assembly on Wednesday, Jonathan will also attend some side events as parts of his attendance at the 66th Session.

Some of the side events which Jonathan is billed to attend are a symposium on counter-terrorism, high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases, a meeting on sustainable energy for all, a high-level meeting on nuclear safety and security, a special session on Libya, and a special plea for the Horn of Africa where about 13.3 million people are in need of urgent assistance due to famine that is plaguing the region.

The symposium on counter-terrorism is expected to bring together United States traditional allies, emerging powers and select countries to address terror threats through a variety of new programmes.

The symposium is organised by the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force Office (CTITF) and will take place in Conference Room 2 (NLB).

In parallel to the symposium, a CTITF-sponsored media roundtable will be organised in partnership with the Department of Public Information (DPI) and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General in Conference Room 7 (NLB).

The high-level meeting will address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has facilitated regional consultations of member states to give governments the opportunity to contribute, particularly by identifying the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases in their countries and the measures that exist to start reversing the epidemic.

Meanwhile, at the conclusion of the UN Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases and leading into the high-level debate of the General Assembly, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, will be attending a high-level, one-year check in on the implementation on the concept of ‘Every woman, Every Child’ effort.
