The Nigerian Copyright Commission says its operatives in Enugu have confiscated pirated products worth N8.5 million and arrested six persons.

A statement issued by the commission, signed by the Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Mr Vincent Oyefeso, in Abuja on Wednesday, said that the suspects were arrested in different locations in Enugu during an operation by the commission's officers.

Oyefeso said that the arrested persons were suspected to be involved in the production and circulation of pirated optical discs and books in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the commission had on Sept. 24 arrested six persons and seized pirated products worth five million naira in an operation in Zamfara.

“Copyright inspectors backed by armed mobile policemen in an operation at the railway line in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, impounded duplicating machines and optical discs.

“The enforcement team also confiscated books as well as printing plates, suspected to be used in printing pirated books,” he said.

The statement also quoted the commission’s Deputy Director of Enforcement, Mr Augustine Amodu, as saying that the commission acted on intelligence report from stakeholders to check the damage that piracy was causing the creative industries and the economy.

Amodu said that the suspects would be prosecuted at the conclusion of investigations into the matter.?
