Election of Officers Tops PDP Constitution Review

The committee charged with the review of the Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commenced sitting yesterday with enforcement of party discipline and mode of electing its officers and candidates topping the agenda.

?The mode of electing its candidates and funding of? the party’s activities were amongst the main issues covered in the memoranda received by the party.
However, a member of the Committee, Hajiya Halima Alfa has made a strong case for more women in the constitution review process.

Hajiya Alfa, who is one of the three females in the Committee, told journalists at the PDP national secretariat that women wanted the party to increase their number representing the party in elective positions.

Speaking after the meeting of the committee, Hajiya Alfa stated that she was satisfied with the number of the memoranda received by the committee and that its work would enhance internal democracy in the party.

Also speaking after the meeting that lasted for more than three hours, Senator Isaiah Balat said the constitutional review would strengthen the party as the member would painstakingly consider all the issues raised in the memoranda.

The former National Chairman of the Party, Senator Barnabas Gemade, noted that the issue of discipline and internal democracy were of serious concern to the committee and members and assured that they would not disappoint in the discharge of the assignment.

On his part, Senator Paul Wapama, National Vice Chairman North East and a member of the Committee,? expressed the confidence in the calibre of members of the committee and said that an acceptable constitution would be produced for the party.

The constitution review committee has as its chairman, the National Legal Adviser of PDP, Chief Olusola Oke.
