Gunmen Kill Constable In Bank Robbery In Borno

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, on Wednesday shot dead a police constable after robbing a bank in Damboa, about 100 kilometres from Maiduguri.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the gunmen invaded the bank in a convoy of about 10 motorcycles at about? 1 p.m. to carry out the operation.

“The gunmen came in a convoy of about 10 motorcycles and shot sporadically at the bank premises to scare away people.

“Some of them took strategic positions at the entrance, while the rest went inside to carry out the operation,'' Malam Yahuza Nuhu, a witness said.

Nuhu said the robbers shot the police constable as they ransacked the bank for money.

“They shot him in the chest and head and left his dead body at the corridor.

“The entire operation lasted a few minutes as they appeared to have prepared very well for the robbery,'' he said.

Mr Simeon Midenda, the state Commissioner of Police confirmed the incident, saying the constable was shot dead during the robbery.

He said the police had commenced investigations and urged people with relevant information to assist the police to ensure peace in the state.
