Members of the human rights community on Monday stormed the office of the Lagos state Governor Babatunde Fashola, to stage a protest against the proposed removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government as well as the poor electrcity generation in the country.
The groups who besieged the governor’s office brandished placards with inscriptions such as, ‘Jonathan Give Nigeria light; “ Fuel Subsidy Removal, Jonathan is Playing with Fire,’’Nigeria Stand Up for Light,” “Fuel Subsidy Removal is Anti People,” amongst others.
Unfortunately the groups appeared to have been jolted by the governor’s refusal to receive the protest letter addressed to President Goodluck Jonathan dated October 24, 2011 .
The coalition of civil society groups? refused to deliver the letter to the commissioner for information and strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba, and his mineral resources counterpart, Taofic Tijani, insisting? that the governor must receive the letter.
When Governor Fashola failed to turn up to receive the two -page letter for delivery to the presidency the groups left the governor’s office in annoyance.
The protesters led by Barrister Malachy Ugwumadu, had earlier converged at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja and marched from the city-centre to the seat of power which is? about six kilometer away from Alausa.
LEADERSHIP learnt that their protest coincided with the state executive council meeting which was on as at the time the civil society groups arrived at the governor’s office.
