Toll Collection: Police Clamp Down On Protesters In Lagos

Making good their threats to resist the proposed collection of tolls on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, expected to begin today, residents of the area embarked on a peaceful protest yesterday which turned violent when the police attempted to stop the rally.

LEADERSHIP learnt the decision to commence tolling on the 49 kilometre- road announced by LCC Managing Director, Mr Opuiyo Oforiokuma on December 1 caused serious civic unrest in the axis, with police team led Chief Superintendent of Police Hakeem Odunmosu the commander of the state government security outfit known as rapid Response Squad unleashing mayhem on the protesting residents who trooped to the roads to stop tolling on the road.

The residents of the three LGAs located around the axis who barricaded the roads in their good numbers were tear gassed by the police, shot at and wounded by the police, even as Journalists who dared to cover the protest had their cameras confiscated by the police stationed by the state government and concessionaires to enforce the tolling on the motorists.

The protesters who branded placards such “ Fashola deceived us “ This concession is fraud”, We will not allow this on our land “ among others vowed to continue to resist any attempt to compel them to pay tolls on the road.
