Man Jailed 12 Months For Stealing Beer

A Magistrates’ Court in Jos,Plateau State, yesterday sentenced a 24-year-old man, Yilsen Samuel, to 12 months imprisonment? for breaking into a beer parlour.

Samuel, who broke into the beer parlour located at CBN Road in Jos metropolis, at 3am on Christmas night, stole “some cartons of alcoholic drinks’’.

The drinks, which included some bottles of? beer and whiskey, were valued at N5,000.
When the case came up for hearing, the accused quickly pleaded guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Ado Ali, who handled the matter, told the court that the offence was contrary to section 287 of the Penal Code.

The Judge, Mrs Talatu Gada, who agreed with the prosecution, however, gave the convict an option of N6,000 fine.

Ali had told the court that the accused was caught with the stolen items when a security guard at the Civil Service Club sighted him, while trying to escape with the loot.
“The security guard raised an alarm, which attracted the police, who apprehended him,’’ Ali told the court.

The prosecutor tendered some bottles of whiskey and beer as exhibits to support his case.

Gada advised the convict to be of good behaviour after his jail term, and warned that he would not get another light sentence if he ever appeared before the court over a similar offence.
