FCTA Pledges To Check Overcrowding In Schools

The secretary, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat, Mallam Kabir Usman, has disclosed that the administration is making concerted efforts towards checking the problem of overcrowding in schools in the territory.

He said to check the problem the administration already constructed about 1, 413 classrooms in both primary and secondary schools in the territory in 2011.

Usman, who disclosed this while giving an overview of the activities of the secretariat in 2011, said 1,299 classrooms were constructed in primary schools while 114 were constructed in secondary schools.

He further stated that 383 classrooms were renovated in public schools in the territory while 309 classrooms were rehabilitated and renovated in primary schools and school fences were constructed for 32 schools as well as renovation of 74 classrooms in secondary schools in the FCT.

The secretary added that in the out gone year, the? secretariat also embarked on the construction of basic science laboratories in 10 schools; introductory technology laboratories in eight schools; construction of science laboratories in four primary schools; construction of nine blocks of Early Child Care Development Education (ECCDE) classrooms; construction of games pitches in four schools; acquisition of 10,000 litre capacity overhead tanks in 39 schools and equipping of sick bays in three schools.

Speaking further he stated that the secretariat also constructed and furnished hostels in two schools and furnished computer studios in two schools.

Usman assured that the secretariat would continue to do its best to offer qualitative education to children in the FCT in conducive learning environments.
