24-hour Curfew: Soldiers, Police Take Over Kaduna

Armed soldiers and policemen on Thursday took over the major streets in Kaduna metropolis and environs in order to ensure full compliance to the 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government.

LEADERSHIP checks revealed that hefty security men took over the Ali Akilu Road down to Ahmadu Bello Way up to Leventis Roundabout near the central market.

The state government had after an emergency security meeting chaired by Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, Tuesday, imposed a twenty-four-hour curfew in Kaduna State following a violent protest by some youths, made up mostly of almajiris and the underage.

A statement by the state government read: “In view of these unfortunate situations, the Kaduna State Security Council has no choice than to impose a 24-hour curfew in Kaduna Metropolis and its environs with effect from 9 pm Tuesday, 10th January, 2012. This measure becomes imperative in order to safeguard lives and properties of innocent citizens. Government is urging all citizens of the state to remain calm, lawful and stay at home until further notice.”
