Strike/Protest: Akure Residents Storm Markets For Food

Various markets in Akure, the Ondo State capital, witnessed large influx of people yesterday as residents made last minute efforts to stockpile food items in preparation for the continuation of?? the ongoing mass protest called by labour unions and civil groups to demand reversal of fuel subsidy withdrawal by government.

The mass protests practically shut down the state last week, but the organised labour in the state pulled out of the street protests Thursday, citing security reasons.

However, the civil groups vowed to continue with mass protests today in the state, as directed by the national leadership of the organised labour.

Therefore, in preparation for another week of protests in the state, residents of Akure yesterday rushed to various markets in the town to stockpile foodstuffs into their homes as the government and labour were yet to reach a compromise.
