Security Council To Fill ICJ Vacancy In April

The Security Council says it will conduct election on?April 27?to fill the vacancy at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague.

The election became necessary, following the resignation of Justice Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh, in December 201.

The?ICJ is the principal judicial organ of the UN.

The council in a resolution, adopted without a vote on Thursday noted with “deep regret” the resignation of the judge, whose term would have ended on Feb. 5, 2018.

According to the Court’s Statute, its judges must be chosen by coordinated actions of both the council and the General Assembly, with the date of elections determined by the council.

Judges were selected on the basis of their qualifications and not nationality but no two judges would come from the same country.

The council said that effort was also taken to ensure that the principal legal systems of the world were reflected in the composition of the court.

Established in 1945, and based in The Hague in the Netherlands, the ICJ settles legal disputes between countries?and gives advisory opinions on legal issues referred to it by other authorised UN organs.
