The wife of the President, Mrs Patience Jonathan, yesterday, in Lagos commissioned the new naval ship, NNS THUNDER, a war ship donated to Nigeria by the United States Government.
The NNS THUNDER, which was handed over to Nigeria on May 13, 2011, set sail on November 21, 2011 and berthed at the Apapa Base on January 4 at 10.58am.
Commissioning the ship at the Naval Base, Victoria Island Lagos, Mrs Jonathan said that the ship would help in fighting the menace of sea robberies and piracy on the nation’s territorial waters.
Experts believe that? Nigerian waters and neighbouring coastal areas of West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea habour the second largest number of pirates and sea robbers, second only to Somalia.
