Court Grants Woman Bail Over Killing Of Her Husband

A Federal High Court in Gudu District of Abuja has granted bail to a 35-year-old woman, Hadiza Abutu, arraigned over the killing of her husband, Ibrahim Abutu in 2011.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Umoh Inah, told the court that he filed an exparte motion praying the court to remand the accused in custody pending the conclusion of investigations.

Hadiza was arraigned on Jan. 20, charged with culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code.

The suspect was accused of shooting her husband with his own gun at their Wuse 2 residence on Feb. 28, 2011.

But Mr Patrick Okolo, counsel to the accused, told the court that he filed an application for bail for his client.

In his ruling, the trial Judge, Abubakar Talba said that pursuant to Section 129, Sub-section 3 of the Criminal Procedure Code, he would not order the remand of the accused.

He, therefore, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with a reliable surety resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case was adjourned to Feb. 7 for continuation of hearing.
