House Committee Wants Harmony In Frequency Allocation

Alhaji Umar Jibril, the Chairman, House Committee on Information and National Orientation, has advised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to ensure harmony in the allocation of frequencies to avoid conflict.

Jibril gave the advice on Tuesday in Abuja when he led members of the committee on a visit to the commission in continuation of their oversight visits to ministries, departments and agencies under the Ministry of Information.

He said the move would curb conflict in frequency management since both the commission and the Ministry of Communication Technology had the same responsibility of allocating frequencies.

Jibril urged the commission to present its challenges to the House of Representatives.

He advised the commission to restructure its community broadcasting in line with democratic tenets to enable the benefiting communities to learn and benefit from the broadcast.

The Director General of NBC, Mr Yomi Bolarinwa, said the commission was planning to put up permanent structures in the six geopolitical zones, adding that contracts had already been awarded for the building of four zonal offices.

“We have already liaised with the affected state governments to help in getting suitable land for the building of the remaining zonal offices,” he said

Bolarinwa said that electronic monitoring equipment had been installed at the commission’s headquarters and that it was trying to do same in the zonal and state offices.

He said the commission was also awaiting a white paper from the government to begin digitisation, “which is already behind schedule”.
