ECOWAS Heads Of State Summit Begins In Abuja On Thursday

The 40th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government will hold in Abuja from Thursday to Friday, according to a statement from ECOWAS Commission.

The statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja said that during the summit statutory positions at the Commission and other ECOWAS institutions would be allocated.

It also said that the summit would discuss the allocation of the position of the President of the Commission and the election of a new Chairman of Authority.

The statement, which was signed by Mr Sunny Ugoh, the Principal Programme Officer (Information) in the commission, said the summit would be presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, the current ECOWAS Chairman.

It said the summit would also appoint four judges to replace those whose tenures at the Community Court of Justice had ended.

According to the statement, other positions to be allocated include those of the Director General and Deputy Director General for the Dakar-based ECOWAS Inter-Governmental Group for Action against Money Laundering and Terror Financing in West Africa.

Similar, it said the summit would also allocate the position of the Director-General and Deputy Director General of the West African Health Organisation, and discuss the report of the ministerial meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.

The statement said the 2011 Annual Report of the President of the commission, the commission’s budget and institutions, the 66th and 67th Ordinary Sessions of the Council of Ministers and the 10th Extra-Ordinary Session of the Council would also be discussed.

The statistics also indicated that 10 out of the 28 children victims of the accidents were among the dead with the Lokoja-Abuja highway accounting for most of the deaths.

Olapade said that the commission would continue to pay special attention to the road, charging motorists to comply with traffic rules to reduce carnage on roads in the state.

He also appealed to the Federal Government to speed up work on the ongoing dualisation of the Abuja-Lokoja highway to curb incessant crashes on the road.
