Kano Targets 6 Million Children For Polio Immunisation.

A total of six million children in Kano state are expected to be immunised against poliomyelitis during the three day immunisation exercise which began on Saturday.

The state Immunisation Officer (SIO), Alhaji Abdurrahman Yakubu disclosed this while answering questions from newsmen in Kano.

He explained that the exercise which was the first in the year, would be conducted in all the 44 local government areas of the state.

Yakubu said that the state Deputy Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, would lead officials of the ministry of health to monitor the exercise, to ensure effective coverage.

According to him, a 26-member committee on eradication of polio set up by the state, will also go round the state to ensure total compliance by parents.

He, therefore, urged parents to allow their children from 0-5 years to be immunised, saying adequate vaccines had been provided to all the local government areas.

Yakubu also called on traditional rulers to give health personnel the necessary support and cooperation to ensure the success of the programme.

NAN recalls that the state government had recently threatened to sack any government official found sabotaging the immunisation exercise.

Meanwhile, Doguwa local government area of the state has pledged to eradicate polio and other childhood killer diseases in the area.

Alhaji Shu'aibu Muhammed, the Sole Administrator of the council, gave the assurance in Danbare ward, while addressing traditional rulers in the area, as part of the flag off of the immunisation.
