Mild-Drama In Court, Lawyers Scramble To Defend Bank Robbers

There was a mild drama on Thursday at Chief Magistrate Court, Akure, venue of the trial of six bank robbers as two lawyers announced their separate appearances as counsel to the six accused persons.

Court Room 3 at the Oke Eda Chief Magistrate complex was filled to capacity with spectators and judicial workers who had come to have a glimpse of the dare devil men.

The six men, one of them a pastor at CAC church on Idanre road, Akure, were alleged to have robbed a new generation bank on Oyemekun Akure by using dynamites to blast the security door of the Bank.

When the case was called before the trial Magistrate, Mr Johnson Adelegan, Mr Azeez Agbaje announced his appearance for the six accused persons.

Immediately he took his seat, another lawyer, Bayo Adesida got up to announce his appearance and told the court that he was holding the brief of Mr Adelanke Akinrata as counsel to the accused persons.

?This created confusion in the court as the Magistrate was at a loss on who to record as the counsel to the alleged bank robbers.

?Agbaje told the court that the accused persons had briefed him to represent them and showed the court the lists of the six accused persons, while Adesida said he was holding the brief of Akinrata.

?To resolve the matter, Adelegan asked each of the accused persons one by one who their lawyer was and they all pointed to Agbaje and mentioned his name out for everybody to hear.

?It was after the issue was resolved that the charges were read to the accused persons in English and Yoruba languages.

The accused persons were brought to the court room in hand cuffs and leg shackles by fully armed policemen.
