Heavy Traffic In Abuja As PDP Holds National Convention

Motorists in Abuja on Friday experienced heavy traffic in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of the PDP national convention slated for Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents who visited some places in the nation’s capital city, report that there was heavy vehicular movement at some strategic places.

Such areas as Maitama District, where Transcorp Hilton is situated and venue of the screening of the PDP aspirants, and the adjoining streets, witnessed heavy presence of vehicles.

Mr Sunday Danjuma, a taxi driver in Abuja, told NAN on Friday that the heavy traffic made it difficult for them to reach locations where drivers were to drop their passengers.

He said it was difficult for them to pick passengers and drop them as quickly as possible due to the heavy traffic.

Mr Samuel Hembaor, another taxi driver, expressed worry over the traffic jam caused by the arrival of PDP delegates in the FCT for the national convention.

He said the influx of politicians into the FCT for the convention adversely affected the operations of commercial motorists.

“The presence of heavy traffic has affected us adversely, especially those of us that are commercial drivers.

“Some of these visitors are not very familiar with the network of roads in Abuja and this is causing a lot of traffic problems.

“I want the police to man the various junctions to ensure that this situation is brought under control.’’

At Transcorp Hilton, the screening witnessed a beehive of activities as some of the aspirants trooped in with their supporters.

At Eagle Square, venue of the convention, security was tight as operatives were seen cordoning off the venue.

Mr Mike Okiro, former Inspector-General of Police, who is the Chairman of the Security Committee for the convention, was seen directing other senior officers to ensure adequate security at the Eagle Square.

NAN also reports that the Police Bomb Disposal Unit as well as the anti-terrorist squad, were positioned at strategic areas inside and outside the square. (NAN)
