The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’I, on Monday, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling examination malpractice in the country.
Rufa'I reaffirmed this in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), led by its chairman, Prof. Jonas Redwood-Sawyer.
On the delegation were the representatives of the 5-member countries of Nigeria, Gambia, Liberia Ghana and Sierra Leone.
She assured them of the ministry’s support in tackling examination malpractice in the country.
“With the support that we are having from this table – my Honourable Minister of State and the team we have here and particularly as we are working very closely with the various states of the federation, through the commissioners of the states – we are really moving forward in terms suppressing this issue of exam malpractice.
“I am sure by now the statistics will show that we are having gradually smaller number of exam malpractice in our halls.”
The minister promised that the ministry would continue to ensure the success of WAEC in the 5-member countries.
Earlier, Redwood-Sawyer had commended Rufa’I and the minister of state for the passion with which they oversaw affairs in the education sector.
He said he was aware that officials of the ministry visited WAEC examination centres to forestall any form of malpractice.
“I must on behalf of WAEC congratulate the ministry for the strides it has made over the years in supporting vision and mission of WAEC.
“We are told at several fora of WAEC that the ministry is always very supportive especially during the conduct of our examinations.
“Ministry officials even visit our exam centres when such examination are being conducted.’’
Redwood-Sawyer said that he was at the ministry to update the ministers on the activities lined-up to mark the 60th anniversary of WAEC.
