Uniport To Host 1st Leg AFN Golden League

The University of Port Harcourt Sports Complex in the Garden City capital of Rivers State will host the first leg of the 2012 AFN Golden Leg this weekend.

Assistant Secretary of the AFN, Mrs Rita Akande confirmed at the weekend that all participating states and clubs have been duly informed of the modalities and events to be competed in at this six legs track and field event.”Entries close on March 26 (today) as we have in the last two weeks sent out invitation letters to states and clubs. I doubt if there will be room for late entries,” observed the AFN assistant scribe.

Events listed for scoring in the league include, (Men);100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, 5000m, 110m hurdles, triple jump, high jump, shot put, the 20km walk race and the relays (400, 1600).

For the women, AFN listed League events to include 100m, 200m, 400m, 300m, 400m hurdles, long jump, high jump, javelin, hammer, 20km walk race and the relays. There will also be room for all comers to compete in the long jump, javelin and 800m. Only 100m hurdles and shot put is available for the women in this category.

Mrs Akande also said that only top four athletes in all the categories would proceed to the next leg of the league while the rest four will be from the all comers that will precede the main events of the two-day athletics fiesta. She also confirmed that there will be bonus 10 points for any of the competing athletes that matched the ‘A’ Olympic standard.
