The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Uyo Business Unit, Akwa Ibom, has lost facilities worth N20 million to vandals, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Mr Uzoma Mbuku, the Uyo Business Manager of PHCN, said this on Friday in Uyo at a Customers Consultative Forum.
Mbuku said that cases of vandalism had risen to 80 in recent times, adding that about 4,000 customers had been denied electricity due to vandals activities.
He said that the Uyo Business Unit was also losing revenue of N12 million monthly, due to acts of vandalism.
The business manager appealed to the customers to assist PHCN to protect its 822 distribution substations.
“I appeal to the communities to watch out and help PHCN to ensure constant supply of electricity,’’ Mbuku said.
He further appealed to the state government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to ensure that contractors handling electricity works do not use substandard cables.
Mbuku also appealed to customers to pay their bills promptly.
In his remark, Mr Emmanuel Ebong, the Chairman of the forum, said that constant power supply was necessary for smooth economic activities.
Ebong said customers should form vigilante groups to protect PHCN installations.
