The Devil Pushed Me Into Selling Civil Defence Forms

Nemesis finally caught up with 43-year-old AbdullahiHaruna, who was arrested by the Kaduna State Police Command for defrauding 101 unsuspecting unemployed youths by issuing them fake employment offers with the letter headed papers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. Midat Joseph reports.

Wonders, they say, shall never end. Indeed, it has turned out that more wonders have continued to unfold in Kaduna State, where a man who has been issuing fake employment offers to unsuspecting Nigerians was finally nabbed by the police and taken into custody for his criminal acts.

AbdullahiHaruna, a 43-year-old man is now cooling his heels at the Kaduna State Police Command, which arrested him over alleged sale of forms and issuance of appointment letters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to about 101 youths in the state.

The appointment letters issued by the suspect had the name and forged signature of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolarin.

The culprit, who spoke to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND at the Police Command, said he made about N401,000 from the illegal deal, although he also claims that he was lured by the devil into the deal.

Haruna, a staff of the NSCDC, who was put on suspension for alleged conspiracy and cheating said, “I have not been paid for three years now and the only way to survive was to embark on this illegal business.”

“I and eight others were taken to court over alleged conspiracy by the NSCDC and I was suspended. For me to settle the debt that I owed, I started selling the forms and issuing appointment letters to people who wanted to be enrolled into the NSCDC using a registered company called Links Employment Services.

“We sold 101 forms for N1, 000 each and gave appointment letters to about three persons for N40, 000 each,” he told LEADERSHIP WEEKEND.

Below, is the conversasion that ensued between the suspect and LEADERSHIP WEEKEND.

What is your name?
My name is AbdullahiHaruna. I am a staff of the Nigerian Security and Civil Corps, who was suspended over alleged conspiracy.

Why were you on suspension?
It is because of a case of conspiracy and cheating. What happened was that one Mr. Peter Adamu came to my place when I was the head trainer for the Civil Defence Corps at the FCT Command and said he wanted to join us. I then I recommended him for the job and he later conspired against me.

Why are you in Police custody?
I was arrested by the Police for issuing fake appointment letters to people in search of jobs.

How did you conceive the idea?
I scanned the appointment letters from my own appointment letter to make ends meet. It is the devil that drove me into the dirty job.

When did you join the Civil Defence?
I joined the Civil Defence Corps in 2007

How many people did you give the appointment letters?
They were three people.

When did you start the job?
Last month.

Where do you want them to work?
That is why I said that it is a fake appointment letter.

How much did you make from the business?
Some gave N40,000 others gave me N30,000.

How many forms did you sell?
I sold 101 forms at the cost of N1000 each. I registered the Links Employment Service with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), which I used to sell the forms.

How were you caught?
The police arrested me in Zaria while I was briefing those who had bought the employment forms.

Do you regret your action?
Yes, I regret committing such a big offence. This is going to be the last time I do it.

How did the temptation come to you?
Since I was suspended, I ran out of a job and I had no salary. In fact, my condition was pitiable and I needed to do something in order to survive.

I feel very bad for defrauding unsuspecting persons of their hard-earned money and I would want to refund all the money if I am given the opportunity to do so.
