The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Wednesday announced that it had licensed a consortium of companies, working on Internet exchange point, for the mobile Number Portability Service (NPS).
Mr Reuben Muoka, the Head, Media and Public Relations Unit of the Commission, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the service would begin operation in the last quarter of 2012.?
NPS is a system that enables subscribers to obtain service that is not from his original network.
According to him, the service is part of NCC’s efforts to improve the effectiveness of telecommunications services in the country.
“We have already licensed the people that will operate the service and they are already installing equipment.
“Hopefully as we promised by the end of the last quarter of 2012, it will come into play.
“If a subscriber holds an airtel SIM card and he is not satisfied with the service or tariff, he can decide to go to Globacom without dropping his old line.
“The subscriber will use the airtel SIM to access Glo service and he will now be paying Glo tariff instead of airtel.’’
He said that NPS would enable a subscriber to move from the service of an operator that failed to give him satisfactory service to another that offered him best service and reduced tariff.
Muoka said that NCC planned to offer choice to customers as a matter of priority.
