Dismissed Police Officer Dock For Alleged Impersonation

A dismissed police officer, Iremirem Daniel, was on Monday docked before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly wearing the Nigeria Police uniform.

Daniel, 45, of Maza Maza area of Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and wearing Nigeria Police uniform.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Police Prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu, told the court that the accused was found wearing Nigeria Police uniform on April 16 at Mile 2 on Badagry Expressway, Lagos, after he had been dismissed from the force.

Inedu said that the accused was using the uniform to harass and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

He explained that the accused could not give a satisfactory account of how he got the uniform when questioned by the police.

The prosecutor said that the accused contravened Sections 287 and 378 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 17, Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Chief Magistrate Amos Adeyemi granted the accused N50,000 bail with two sureties in like sum. In addition, the sureties should show proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned till May 10 for hearing.
