FG Summons Governors, Stakeholders To Address Challenges Of Almajiri Education

The Federal Government on Wednesday summoned State Governors, Commissioners for Education and other Stakeholders to address the challenges facing the Almajiri Education Programme.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, said this while briefing the State House Correspondents after a meeting with Vice President Namadi Sambo, where the the programme was reviewed.

She said that the vioce president, governors, a team from the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders would be meeting on Friday to address the issues of sustainability, access and other problems facing the smooth implementation of the Almajiri education programme.

?“But the major challenge that we are having now is to do with the issue of sustainability and how far can we go in terms of addressing the issue of access and of course how far can we go on the issue of the Mallams or the Teachers of these children, removing them from the streets and living the Teachers will may not solve our problem.

“So, all these were issues that were tabled and discussed in terms of the way forward and of course it was a kind of preparation meeting for a major meeting of the Almajiri Education programme; Sustainability and the Way Forward, that is coming up on Friday with all the State Governors and the Vice President and of course the team from Federal Ministry of Education. ”

She said that a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) would be signed between the State and the Federal Governments on the implementation of the Almajiri Education programme.

Also speaking on the programme, the Minister of State for Education, Mr Nyeson Wike, said that the Federal Government would prefer to use “food” rather than? ''force'' to entice the Almajiris out of the streets.
