Environmental Offences: 21 Arrested From March To April

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) said it arrested 21 persons for various environmental offences between March 10 and April 12, 2012.

This, the administration said, was? in furtherance of efforts to maintain a well kept environment in Abuja with its aesthetic beauty.

FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed made the disclosure on Wednesday in his office.

He further stated that apart from those imprisoned, 1,258 persons were also prosecuted during the period under review just as the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) sealed up 86 premises for various environmental offences.

Mohammed added that environmental health officers inspected 1,372 premises to ensure that such environments were kept clean.

“The Abuja Environmental Protection Board during the period served 1,116 abatement notices with 8 premises fumigated”.

He further stated that the AEPB collaborated with a security firm at Jabi and Gwarinpa I (Life-Camp) districts respectively, which led to the arrest of thieves and recovery of stolen sewer manhole covers, adding that the suspects are currently being prosecuted.

He vowed to provide the needed political power for the AEPB to effectively perform its statutory responsibility, stressing that the cleanliness of Abuja was fait accompli because Abuja is the window in which the world sees Nigeria.
