UNILAG Suspends Activities For 2 Weeks

Following the continued protest of students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), now known as Moshood Abiola University (MAUNI), the senate of the school, yesterday, ordered the closure of the institution for two weeks.

The senate said the decision was taken to allow peace return to the school.

The senate further issued an ultimatum to all students to vacate the university’s premises by 11am and instructed the school security to arrest any student seen within the premises after the deadline.

The decision of the school authority to shut down the university for two weeks did not go down well with the students who kicked against the order, promising to hang around the campus premises.

Yesterday, students of the University of Lagos disrupted the flow of traffic in Lagos State by blocking the Third Mainland Bridge as part of their protest action, over the renaming of their institution after the late Abiola.

Many of the students who heard the development said they were not happy the protests they spark off led to the closure of the school.

The two-week suspension order is set to affect the final students who were about writing their examination before the sudden suspension of academic activities.

The students have however vowed to continue their protest at the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA) today, after the burial of the late vice chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe, saying it would make the protest more visible.

Very early yesterday morning, thousands of the students had chartered BRT buses to obstruct vehicles on the Third Mainland Bridge which resulted in a serious traffic gridlock as workers going to work were stranded on the 12km stretch bridge. It took the intervention of policemen before they were forced off the road.
