Faroukgate: Suspend Farouk From Plenary Sittings – Labour Party

The Labour Party (LP), yesterday, asked the leadership of the House of Representatives to out rightly suspend Hon Farouk Lawan from the plenary sessions in the? House.? The party said that merely suspending him as chairman of the education committee and chairman of ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy probe was not enough.

The chairman of the party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu,? who stated this in Abuja also called for the scrapping of the ‘probe’ method of investigating crimes as it had failed Nigerians since independence, advocating for the institution of judicial panel of inquiry to be manned by eminent jurists.

Nwanyanwu further advocated for special courts to deal with corrupt persons as well as making Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) a truly independent body.

He said: “I thought the House of Representatives should have suspended Farouk Lawan not only from the committee but from sitting so as to totally exonerate the leadership from this fraud and corrupt activities. It is not enough to remove him from the committees.

If you are a hunter and now, you are hunted then you must carry your own cross. I expected him to have been suspended from plenary session until further notice, it is in their rules.

“In the past, we have seen the suspension of Senator Arthur Nzeribe. He was suspended for several weeks for violating the rules of the assembly. Not too long ago, we saw Dino Melaye and a number of representatives members suspended in the last Assembly for offences which are not even near to what Farouk Lawal has admitted he committed.

“There is more to it and I believe they should do better than what they have done to prove to the world that they have nothing to do with that criminal act. As we talk don’t be surprised if you see him sitting in the hallowed chamber tomorrow. They are only making us to be laughing stock in the eyes of the world. What a way of fighting corruption.”
