Former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has called on the Federal Government to reform the Nigeria Police Force to enable it to tackle corruption and insecurity in the country.
Ribadu made the call on Tuesday at an interactive session with the management and staff of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in Abuja.
He said that the police, as an institution, had been weakened and needed to reform in order to confront the challenges of corruption and insecurity.
“We have destroyed and weakened an institution that is constitutionally assigned the responsibility to enforce law and order internally in this country,’’ Ribadu said, noting that military personnel discharged internal security duties contrary to the provisions in the constitution.
Ribadu, who is the Chairman, Special Task Force on Petroleum Revenue, urged the Federal Government to consistently train and retrain the police to enable them to tackle corruption and insecurity in the country.
“If government reforms the police, I believe with time, they will assist to fix the judiciary,’’ he said.
Ribadu urged the management of NERC to dedicate 25 per cent of its time to train and retrain its staff.
He added that building professionalism would make?the commission to discharge its responsibilities rightly and achieve positive results.
According to him, the management should be consistent, just, fair and transparent in its decision making in order to take credit of keeping electricity on in the country.
Ribadu said that the commission as a regulatory agency must start to reform the power sector and find civil ways of penalising corrupt leaders in the sector.
Speaking, Dr Sam Amadi, the Chairman of NERC, said the interactive session was to share experience with Nigerian leaders who had managed organisations in both the private and public sectors. (NAN)
