Dr Mohammad Ahmad, Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), has commended Nigeria and Benin Republic for their efforts at resolving the boundary dispute between them.
Ahmad gave the commendation in Abuja on Monday at a Joint Standing Committee on the Delimitation of Nigeria-Benin International Boundaries.
“I will like to commend the effort of our predecessors both in Nigeria and Benin.
“The process in which most of our boundary disputes are resolved in a brotherly manner is most commendable,’’ Ahmad said.
He said that the aim of the meeting was to foster and accomplish a peaceful border regime along Nigeria and Benin Republic boundaries.
The director-general noted that Nigeria and Benin Republic boundaries were among the most friendly borders Nigeria had enjoyed among its neighbours.
Ahmad said that the two countries set out at a meeting in 2009 and 2010 in Benin Republic to ensure that the issues and tasks lined up for accomplishment were realised.
He, however, urged participants at the meeting to contribute meaningfully to arrive at decisions that would cement the brotherly cooperation.
‘’Kindly let us do justice to these issues and take decisions that will foster peaceful co-existence among brothers dwelling along our common borders.
A Permanent Secretary from Benin republic, Dr Ayite Baglo, advised the two countries to observe the principles of peace and friendship to sustain cooperation between them.
Baglo said that peace would ensure progress and development in the boundary areas which he said, had remained marginalised for a long time.
Baglo said that the African Union had fixed 2017 to examine the achievements recorded on the delimitation of boundaries among African countries.
