South Korean Archer Sets 2012 Olympic Games’ First Record

An archer from the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in London on Friday became the first athlete to set new world record in the 2012 Olympic Games.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent reports that Korea's Im Dong-hyun broke his own 72-arrow mark of 696 by three points in the archery men's individual ranking round and then went on to be part of a record in the team shoot.

Im with Kim Bubmin and Oh Jin-hyek, helped register a 216-arrow total of 2,087 to smash the world record by 18 points.

The day's shooting got underway in perfect conditions with the Korean trio setting the standard to justify their top three seeding.

World Number 2, Im led the way by breaking the world record for the third occasion since the London 2012 test event in spite of rain affecting the second half of the ranking shoot.

He finished with a superb 699, while Kim was just one point behind with 698 with Oh closing in with 690.

The top five were rounded out by Great Britain's Larry Godfrey, who recorded a personal best of 680 and Japan's Takaharu Furukawa one point further back at 679.

World number one Brady Ellison of Team USA came 10th with a total of 676 and Ukraine's reigning Olympic champion Viktor Ruban was down in 43rd with 660.

NAN reports that Team Nigeria is not taking part in the event.
