Anxiety Mounts As A 3 Storey Building Collapses In Lagos

There was palpable fear in Lagos as a three-storey building collapsed leaving scores of residents and others still trapped in the rubbles.

The building located at 11 Anikantamo Street, off Adeniji-Adele road, was said to have crumbled at about 1pm yesterday prompting rescue operations by men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and scores of security operatives to storm the area in search of likely survivors.

Though the site had been cordoned off when our correspondent got to the scene, at about 2:30pm, officials who spoke to LEADERSHIP said that so far no casualty has been recorded.

Officials of the LASEMA, Lagos State Safety and Federal Fire Services, the Red Cross, policemen and National Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel were seen attempting to rescue the trapped residents.

When contacted, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, denied in a telephone chat that there was casualty at the collapsed building and said that the police and other agencies swiftly moved to the scene and helped to evacuate the victims.

“So far, there have been no casualty but there are still evacuation going on by the appropriate agencies. We hope that at the end of the exercise, no life will be lost as the police and LASEMA are on top of the matter”, she said.
