NASS Throws Weight Behind Jonathan On Sports Overhaul

The National Assembly has reiterated their total support to President Goodluck Jonathan’s planned overhaul of the nation’s sports occasioned by Team Nigeria’s abysmal failure at the just concluded London 2012 Olympics. Their support is not without caution that enabling law that will enhance sports transformation be first put in place.

Chairman House Committee on Sports, Honourable Geoffrey Aliyu Gaiya, who made this known in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP SPORTS, said it is the desire of the National Assembly to reposition the nation’s sports from the grassroots. “As a chairman of the House committee on sports, it has been the desire of the committee to reposition the sports sector because without the? hiding facts we know that our sports is at its lowest ebb even before we went for the Olympics.?

“We are in total support of the president call for complete overhauling of sports. But we have to first and foremost put in place enabling laws and guiding principle on how we want our sports to be run and managed right from the Local Government Area Councils to the state and federal levels.? Also we must insist that the right things are done if we really want to rescue the sports sector,” he said.

Gaiya wants the government to quickly rehabilitate the decay state of the nation sports facilities across the country and the president not to hesitate in removing those in the sports sector that has over years enriched themselves with funds meant for sports development. He said those that will be appointed in the future to head sports should be given a time limit and framework to perform.
