Nigerian Tennis Starlets Shine In ITF Tourney

Two Nigerian tennis young stars have done the country proud in the recently held International Tennis Federation tournament held in Benin Republic and Togo. The tournament was the ITF West and Central Africa Juniour Circuit for the 18 and under category. Serah Adegoke won two gold medals in the doubles category for girls in Benin and Togo while Emmanuel Idoko won bronze in Togo.

Nigeria stormed the tournament with nine young stars comprising seven boys and two girls. Team Nigeria coach Ubale Mohammed said the competition was highly competitive and good for the young stars development because it was an ITF rated tourney which had countries like USA, Turkey, Zimbababwe, South Africa and Egypt attend. He said the tournament drew ten participating countries from the West and Central Africa sub regions and accommodated such top countries because young players used it as a competition to qualify for Junior Grand Slam tourneys upon garnering enough points.

He said apart from the two who won medals, all others got to the quarter finals and third round. “I am very impressed with the performance of the team because the tournament attracted tough countries from Europe and America. It also gave it impact and I believe if we get more sponsorship we will be able to do better”

Mohammed Mohammed, Sadiq Tswako, Emmanuel Sunday, Edward Christopher, Biola Kuku and Benson Azuka completes the boy’s list while the other girl is Ann Okoro.
